Do people spell your name wrong? What can you do about it?
This morning I received an email from a person who has known me more than 30 years and my Christian name had been misspelled, I am sure it was a one off, however as it happens regularly, I got to thinking “what can I do about it”.
I remembered from a long time ago that it was Dale Carnegie who said “Remember that a person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language” I did a Google search on this and found this post Dale Tip # 6: A person’s name is the sweetest sound.
Being a person who has trouble remembering names I found it a good read in particular his strategy for remembering names.
Whilst doing the Google search I saw a blog titled “When They Misspell Your Name” by Lynn Gaertner-Johnston.
When Lynn led her first live online class, Email Intelligence. A participant asked what can she do to make people spell her name correctly in emails. The rest of Lynn’s post made a very interesting read.
As a result I have decided to trial putting this on all my emails: –
Derrick (Think Oil Derrick)
and when the need arises
Storey ( Not Story book think 10 Storey building)
I will let you know the response I get.
